Everywhere we go, we're always looking for the best-of-the-best local restaurants, products and services. None of the businesses listed below have paid for their recommendation. We simply believe in how they do what they do and hope others will give them a shot so we can continue enjoying what they offer in the future as well. Here's to supporting local small businesses! The few recommendations below that include the gold medal award indicate that they're our top choice for their category not only in their local market, but they're our top pick in their category worldwide.

Truth be told, some of my greatest life stories capture "Heck yeah!" successes, but most of my experiences include “What did I just do?!” failures. It makes sense though. Somewhere along the way I bought into the idea that failure doesn’t have to be permanent.  Failure is merely a learning opportunity and brings you one step closer to getting it right. It is for this reason that failure has led me to some of my sweetest victories.

If you look close enough, every story from the past provides a learning opportunity for the future. My life mission statement is this:

There's a lot of leaders out there, but I've discovered that about 90% of them aren't worth following. Become a leader worth following. You may figure out how based on trial and error… OR you can learn from the past experiences of others so you can leapfrog over their failures and gain insight from their wins.

Let's play leapfrog.

It's not that I believe I have mastered any of my passions, but I have found a leader worth following: Jesus. I invite you to join my journey as I continue to explore and apply what I have learned from the greatest leader of all time. Simple and small action steps will not only help you become a leader worth following, but a leader who IS followed. Let's do this.

“To inspire and equip others to become leaders who are worth following.”

If you've never had a spudnut, it is a donut actually created from a potato rather than bread, but you'd never know. You can add jelly to nearly any donut they make, but the good ol' classic glazed is one of their best. Their Glazed Turnover is slightly more dense than the other donuts, giving it a bit more weight and substance to it. Fill it with cherry and you're in for a treat. There aren't a ton of donut choices in Farmington, but Spudnuts won't leave you disappointed. FYI they're closed on Sundays.

Sure, this is a bit biased since it's my own burrito, but after decades of perfecting breakfast burritos, I do have to say it's legitimately one of the best ever. The "Matt Burrito" is on the unofficial menu. It includes eggs, cheese, hashbrowns, green chile, chorizo and a ghost pepper sauce. The ghost pepper sauce provides more flavor than heat, so don't be intimidated. However, there is still plenty of heat in this burrito, so if you don't like spicy, order a regular breakfast burrito without any chile. If you're in for a flavor bomb and awesome, give the "Matt Burrito" a try.

Jacob Fuller is one of the friendliest business owners my wife and I have ever met. He understands that customer service is all about making raving fans. He makes them every day, and I want to see this new cafe become a huge success. That being said, Pocketstone Cafe has some incredible food. My wife and I have tried multiple items, including biscuits and gravy, the their famous cinnamon roll, an acai bowl, an Albuquerque Turkey, the Monte Cristo, and two of their ginormous cookies. In case you're wondering, the snickerdoodle cookie was our favorite.. We haven't tried anything we don't like, the Monte Cristo is our favorite item on the menu and our favorite sandwich in town.

Sam and Cathy Gonzales have been serving Mexican food in San Juan County for several decades. They've got a lot of great things on their menu in two locations, but my favorite thing on their menu is their Grilled Chicken Tacos. The secret to these tacos is that they come on flour tortillas that they lightly grill so they are just slightly crispy. Their salsa is legit too.

Maybe you’ve never produced music or baptized anyone, but I think we can still be friends since I'm pretty sure you and I still have something in common: YOU'RE SCREWED UP!

I know I just insulted you/us, but keep reading!

I love sopapillas, but the best sopapillas in the world are located in Santa Fe, NM, at PC's. They are more "meaty" than most other sopas, and are absolutely phenomenal.

Durango Coffee Company has some of the best coffee anywhere. They have a great ambiance with a mixture of vintage furniture, and will serve your coffee in a mug if you ask for it. My typical go-to is their medium house blend of coffee served in a mug, but every once in a while I splurge for my favorite thing on their menu, their White Chocolate Macadamian Nut Frappuccino. In all fairness, I haven't tried all their other flavors, but if you love White Chocolate Macadamian Nut cookies, this frap will be one of your favorites.

The James Ranch is between Durango and Purgatory and will blow your mind. It has a beautiful location overlooking a huge pasture of wildlife. There are trees, picnic tables, and plenty of grass to enjoy the view from the lawn, the outdoor patio or the indoor dining area. We tried multiple burgers, but their caramelized cheese on their signature burger will make you want to go out and buy a flat-top grill and start making your own. After trying the signature burger at James Ranch, I literally changed the way I make hamburgers at home. I kid you not. They book out for events, weddings, etc. We've never been there for an event, but look forward to going back for their burgers. They've got a little gift shop where you can buy meats, cheeses, and other goodies as well.

These wings will change your life. They've got dozens of flavors. Take your pick. It's not the flavor that makes these wings the best. It's the process how they make them. This place is a little hole in the wall, but if you're serious about wings, this will set your new standard. I usually pick boneless over bone-in, but at Cuckoo's, skip the boneless and get the bone-in.  They will blow your mind.

Ken & Sue's is absolutely amazing! Their food is incredible, but it's also really affordable. Ashten and I went for our anniversary, and have unofficially made it our "go to" place for all birthdays and anniversaries to come. We are a bit concerned about the future of Ken & Sue's considering it's up for sale, and word on the street is that Ken & Sue's will be changing names when they change owners. To the new owner of Ken & Sue's: keep the menu and the pricing PLEASE! We are raving fans, and would hate to see new ownership change something that's incredibly good. The filet mignon is fantastic, as are the chicken skewers. The Baby Greens Salad is one of the best salads we've ever had with its toasted walnuts. But what makes The List is their famous dessert. I'm not a big creme brulee fan, but Ken & Sue's creme brulee with its fresh strawberries will make you wake up in the middle of the night salivating. It's so good, if you don't live near Durango, it's worth booking a flight for. Trust me.

Not to be confused with Krispy Kreme, Crispy's Donuts is a local donut shot in North San Diego County. The best donut in the world technically isn't even a donut. When we moved to San Diego in 2013, we tried the Glazed Cronut. It was alright, but nothing to write home about. The owners continued to tweak the recipe for the 5 years we lived there, and after all the adjustments, they nailed it! They only make them on Saturday mornings, and unless you live locally, be sure to call ahead and reserve yours because they sell out quick. It's hands down the best donut anywhere.

Oscar's makes one of the best breakfast burritos ever. It's a hole-in-the-wall joint in Vista, CA, and the line for their burritos is 10 cars deep anytime you show up. They're open 24/7 btw. The secret to Oscar's is that you have to go on Friday or Saturday. The wait is longer, but it doesn't matter because you have to walk inside anyways. Reason why is because on Fridays and Saturdays, they make a signature pico de gallo they don't offer the rest of the week. You can't get it in the drive-thru window, so bypass the line, go inside, and while you wait for your burrito, visit the salsa bar and get yourself a huge cup of their salsa to go with your burrito. Anytime we visit San Diego, it's not uncommon that I'll get an Oscar's breakfast burrito before I visit In 'N Out. It's that good. I've had a lot of breakfast burritos in my day, but Oscar's is the best in California.

If you look close enough, every story from the past provides a learning opportunity for the future. My life mission statement is this:

You can become a leader worth following by figuring it out on your own based on trial and error… OR you can learn from the past experiences of others so you can leapfrog over their failures and gain insight from their wins. Let's play leapfrog.  It's not that I believe I have mastered any of my passions, but I have definitely learned things along the way and would love to share the good and the bad so you can leapfrog me. My hope is that you can take simple and small action steps based on each blog post that will help you become a better leader. You’ll be amazed at how far you can go by taking one small step at at time.

Nearly every sandwich at Board & Brew is fantastic, but the Grilled Chicken Club has the edge over all the rest. Be sure to get at least 2 of their signature sweet and sour sauces on the side for the full experience. If you're visiting San Diego, look up any Board & Brew since they have multiple locations and they'll take care of you.

Maybe you’ve never produced music or baptized anyone, but I think we can still be friends since I'm pretty sure you and I still have something in common: YOU'RE SCREWED UP!

I know I just insulted you/us, but keep reading!

San Diego has a lot of options for fish tacos, but the best fish taco in the world goes to the Fish District in Bressi Ranch. They have a happy hour between 2-4p when you can get discounted tacos. El Pueblo has the best 99-cent fish tacos in San Diego, but Fish District has the best overall fish taco.

Rubio's is a staple for anyone who lives in San Diego. It's a locals favorite, but buried on their menu are a few gourmet items. The Gourmet Shrimp Taco plate includes smaller street tacos with grilled shrimp, bacon and avocado.

Technically this is located in Oceanside, but it's still part of North San Diego County. Many locals would fight me saying that Pizza Port makes the best pizza, but they only say that because they've never been to Breakwater. If you like BBQ Chicken Pizza, this will become your new standard worldwide.
